Harleyville Cement Plant Recognized for Recycling Efforts

Plant recycles metal, wood, paper and more

Each year, the Harleyville Cement Plant submits information to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) regarding recycling efforts completed during the previous fiscal year, and this year, plant employees received recognition for their participation in the SC Smart Business Recycling Program.

This recognition acknowledges of the efforts the plant goes through every year. Last year, the Harleyville Cement Plant recycled 245 tons of ferrous metals, 18 tons of wood, over three tons of office paper, 0.26 tons of electronics/fluorescent bulbs. In addition, they also received credit for using recycled tires (2,342 tons) and combustion ash (202,957 tons) as alternative fuels and raw materials in production.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC) Smart Business Recycling Program is a free, voluntary program designed to:

  • Help South Carolina’s businesses reduce the environmental impact of its operations and incorporate environmental stewardship and sustainability in its business practices.
  • Promote and recognize businesses for their recycling and sustainability efforts.
  • Provide technical assistance to help facilities begin or expand green practices such as: waste reduction, recycling and composting; energy and water conservation; and environmentally preferred purchasing.
