Bayway Bridge-Structure E

The owner’s project, FDOT, encourages the use of Portland-limestone cement (PLC) Type IL in all their projects, knowing that the cement has to undergo rigorous testing and must be approved prior to use. Ready Mix Concrete Supplier, Argos, provided mix submittals to contractor American Bridge Company and convinced them to use PLC Type IL for the sustainable and performance aspects of the material.

The design-build project includes replacing the existing two-lane bascule bridge with a two-lane, high-level, fixed bridge (Bayway Structure “E,” which is the bridge between Isla Del Sol and Tierra Verde islands), repaving the existing SR 679 roadway between SR 682 and the new bridge, and replacing a seawall south of the bridge along SR 679 in Pinellas County. Argos PLC Type IL and SCMs were used in most of the concrete mix designs (excludes precast elements). The concrete mixes performed very well in this aggressive environment application.
